On Saturday 160.000 people demonstrated in the streets of Barcelona to urge the Spanish government to host more refugees. Ada Colau, the mayor of Spain’s second biggest city, had called on Barcelona residents to “fill the streets” and march under the slogan “We want to welcome them”. Many of the protesters held signs saying for example “Enough excuses, welcome them now”. The Spanish government promised in 2015 to take more than 16.000 refugees through the Relocation and Resettlement program of the European Union. But only 1,100 asylum seekers have been resettled so far.
